However, the rugged east coast prevented a railway between Douglas and Ramsey despite several proposals. The latest, by the Manx East Coast Railway Company in 1891, was eventually withdrawn.<\/p><p data-start=\"399\" data-end=\"964\">Bruce and Saunderson included a coastal railway in their ambitious Howstrake development plans. Thanks to Siemens&#8217; reliable electric locomotives, they proposed an electric tramway from Douglas to Groudle. The most difficult section was between Derby Castle and Onchan Head, where engineers reclaimed land, built sea walls, carved shelves into cliffs, and bridged Port Jack Glen with massive retaining walls. Construction required extensive blasting, hundreds of workers, and significant manual labour, yet the tramway and coastal road were completed by August 1893.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-37e17cd e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"37e17cd\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f8fa960 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"f8fa960\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-58e931f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"58e931f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">02<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9696867 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9696867\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Opening, Expansion, and Tourism Success<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ddaa06 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3ddaa06\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"1034\" data-end=\"1382\">The first return journey from Douglas to Groudle took place on <strong data-start=\"1097\" data-end=\"1115\">26 August 1893<\/strong>, attended by Alexander Bruce, Frederick Saunderson, and other prominent guests. The tramway officially opened to the public on <strong data-start=\"1243\" data-end=\"1263\">7 September 1893<\/strong>, and by <strong data-start=\"1272\" data-end=\"1285\">July 1894<\/strong> it had been extended to Laxey, becoming the <strong data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1381\">Isle of Man Tramways and Electric Power Company<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"1384\" data-end=\"1973\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Initially planned to support housing developments, the railway quickly became a major tourist attraction. Winter services connected Douglas and Laxey year-round, and the track was upgraded to double line during the winter of 1893\u201394. Connected with the Douglas horse tramway at Derby Castle, the electric railway transformed Groudle into one of the island&#8217;s leading tourist destinations, attracting over <strong data-start=\"1788\" data-end=\"1817\">100,000 visitors annually<\/strong> by the turn of the century.
