A Tribute to the Lifeboat Crews of the Thorne Wreck<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

This tribute honors the courage, skill, and selflessness of the lifeboat crews who responded to the wreck of the Thorne<\/em>. Facing dangerous seas and extreme conditions, they risked their own lives in an effort to rescue those in peril. Their dedication and bravery remain a lasting testament to the proud tradition of maritime rescue on the Isle of Man.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Dear Sir, – I beg to express through the medium of your valuable paper, the gratitude of myself and of all who were on board the barque Thorne to the crews of the two Douglas lifeboats for their bravery in rescuing us, at the risk of their lives, during the night of January 24th. The lifeboatmen acted throughout with the greatest skill, coolness and judgement and it is only due to them that this public recognition of their gallantry should be made. I will take this opportunity of thanking the friends who so kindly welcomed us when we were landed in a distressed condition: and to the many residents who have since shown us such sympathy. Their kindness to one who was until a fortnight ago a stranger to Douglas will, in spite of the painful circumstances, always be to me a source of pleasurable recollection. The Thorne's Crew<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Mona\u2019s Herald of 29th January published a report stating that “..the rescued men were landed at the market steps and were taken to the Royal Hotel….and provided with hot drinks. The names of the crew of the Thorn are as follows”. The report then listed –<\/p>

Capt Glazebrook; Stanley Taggart, First Mate; F.E.B. Turner, Second Mate; F.H. Raynolds, (or Renvellson as named at the Inquiry), Boatswain; Duncan Gordon, Carpenter; Gilbert Morice and Robert Elvidge, apprentices; Able seamen – William Stirling,George Orr, Julius Paris, Henry Farre, R.K. Keith, John Davidson, Karl Lorraine, Hugh Fulton, W.H. Dawson; and, A.V. Ropins, Boy.<\/p>

This list was probably compiled by a reporter visiting the rescued men at the Royal Hotel. It was common knowledge that Taggart was mate of the Thorne and so his name was added although he was not among those rescued, being ashore at the time. A total of 17 is listed, and deleting Taggart gives us 16. The addition of the two passengers gives 18, which agrees with the number rescued by the Thomas Rose. When Taggart went ashore he was accompanied by two hands and it would appear that these were not present at the hotel when the reporter made his list of names. The mathematics would therefore be – 16 crew and 2 passengers rescued by the life boat plus Taggart and two seamen ashore, giving a total of 21 on the Thorne when she sailed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
